f5ve chart third in Japan this week on the steepest follower curve in our whole queue. The clearest evidence for it is a room in Tottenham, a venue upgrade of roughly seven times, and a catalogue sung entirely in Japanese.

Of the 45 scored Japanese artists on our chart this week, f5ve place third at 88.2. What put them there is the steepest follower curve in this week's entire queue: 407,838 Instagram followers on 1 July, 526,854 on 24 August — a little over twenty-nine per cent in eight weeks. Over the same window our desk logged 759 tracked events in Japanese venues.

Our appearance registry holds no dated show for them at all, which is its own kind of finding: five women who have played Summer Sonic, Ultra Japan, Brooklyn and Los Angeles are invisible to a file built from what venues and artists post about each other. So we went to the listings instead, and the listings say something the chart cannot. The growth is Japanese. The evidence for it is mostly not.

A MINUTE IN TOTTENHAM

On 27 September the group play their first headline show in London. It was booked into Colours Hoxton, a room of about three hundred, and sold out in roughly one minute; it was moved to HERE at Outernet, which holds about two thousand, and sold out again. That is a venue upgrade of nearly seven times, executed in a city where they have released no localised product, where we could find no confirmed radio support, and where they have played exactly once before — the same Outernet room, on somebody else's bill, in 2024.

The night before, they appear at Margins United, the Eastern Margins festival in Tottenham, where one of the five also plays a separate back-to-back set in the night rave. Count the group's whole public performance history by country and the shape is plain: seventeen dates in Japan, eight in the United States, one in the United Kingdom before this month. Their YouTube channel is not even registered in Japan; it is registered in the United States.

None of that makes them less Japanese, and they are pointed about it. The lyrics are in Japanese, which in an export act is a decision rather than a default. “We have all Japanese lyrics. We embrace our culture. We represent Japan,” KAEDE told Dazed last year, drawing the contrast with groups who switch to English on the way out.

SCENE

A venue upgrade of nearly seven times, in a city where they have released nothing localised.

WHERE THEY CAME FROM

The group did not begin under this name. They launched in 2022 as SG5 — Sailor Guardians 5 — a licensed Sailor Moon project announced through the management company Three Six Zero, debuting not in Tokyo but at Anime Central in Illinois and Anime Expo in Los Angeles. Four of the five had already had a career: SAYAKA, KAEDE, RURI and MIYUU came out of Happiness and E-girls, the fifth, RUI, out of iScream. In April 2024 the Sailor Moon framing was dropped and the group became f5ve.

The production line behind them is Western and expensive. Their debut album SEQUENCE 01, released digitally on 5 May last year and on Japanese CD two days later, credits BloodPop as producer on every track but the intro, A. G. Cook on two, Hudson Mohawke on one, and carries a Kesha feature. It reached number thirty-nine on the Oricon weekly album chart. A deluxe edition followed in November, twenty-nine tracks across two discs.

What has not followed is 2026 product. One commercial single this year, a brand collaboration in June; otherwise a Perfume cover posted to their channel in July and a run of vlogs. Which is what makes the follower curve worth a piece rather than a chart row: it is climbing hardest in a year with almost nothing to sell.

METHOD

Our tracker had their Spotify listeners at 5. The scraper had been reading the digit inside their name.

WHAT WE ARE NOT TELLING YOU

We cannot tell you how any of it sounds. We were in none of these rooms, we have conducted no interview, and the quotes here are lifted from other people's, with the outlets named below. We do not have a TikTok figure for them: the account exists, the platform served us a bot check, and we did not go around it.

Two numbers that circulate we are deliberately not printing. First-week sales for the debut album appear in two places at two different figures, neither on a chart page we could read, so we give the Oricon peak and stop. And we cannot verify Western radio play in either direction — we found none, which is not the same as establishing there is none.

One thing our own systems got wrong is worth saying out loud, because it nearly reached this page. Our tracker recorded this group's Spotify monthly listeners as 5. The real figure is 427,956. The scraper we use had been reading the first digit it found in the page text, and the text runs the artist's name straight into the phrase it was looking for — so “f5ve” gave up its 5, U2 gave up its 2, and Maroon 5 gave up its 5. Forty-eight rows across the platform were affected. We found it while checking this piece, we fixed the parser the same day, and Spotify is not part of the score that put them third — but it was queued to be.

WHAT THIS PIECE DOES NOT CLAIM

This piece claims nothing about how the music sounds and contains no interview of ours. It does not print a TikTok following, first-week album sales, or any claim about Western radio play — none of the three could be sourced. The quotes are other outlets' and are attributed to them.
